About Gloucester Road Books

The shop opened its doors in April 2021, one of a small number of bookshops in the UK quixotic enough to spring up in the midst of the pandemic. The shop space had been occupied by a florist for decades before it closed in March 2020, and some fairly serious renovation had to happen before the building was ready for books. The dividing wall was partially removed, tiles & linoleum were taken up, floorboards were replaced and restored, and shelves were lovingly made by hand. Now it’s filled with the most interesting mix of books we can find to satisfy the most voracious of browsing appetites.

The most important thing to us is that the shop is a fascinating place to explore. Some of the subject sections are a little broader than they might be elsewhere – for instance our ‘Time and Place’ section encompasses books on History, Travel Literature, Geography and Reportage. We want to encourage people to browse as broadly as possible, and we hope that breaking down some of the ubiquitous subject distinctions will help with that.

We also have a significant focus on titles published by small independent presses. There are lots of really brilliant small publishers putting out incredibly exciting books at the moment, and we want to help get these out into the world.

We do, of course, have plenty of the kinds of books you would expect to find in any good bookshop – Fiction, Non-Fiction, and a range of fantastic books for children of all ages. The stock is carefully chosen and constantly changing, so even if you pop in every week there will always be new books to find.
